Curcumin Plus Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Curcumin Plus is unlike any other dietary supplement. Specially formulated with four unique ingredients, all of which are clinically tested and three of which are patented. No other natural dietary supplement product can compare.

Natural ingredients, when skillfully combined, are more potent. Such compounds have a balancing effect and can be used over long periods of time without building a tolerance or decreasing the efficacy and potency of the ingredients.

Formulated using ingredients that have been carefully chosen not only for their individual actions but also using the concept of synergy.

All ingredients are grown wild-crafted and sustainably harvested without the use of pesticides, or herbicides, and are non-irradiated from selected farms. They are also manufactured soy-free, gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and non-GMO.

All ingredients used are clinically tested, patented, and recognized as the “gold standard” for setting the potency and purity of the most active compounds.

Ingredients are placed together using specialized Bi-layered Technology keeping ensuring the potency of all ingredients at the time of consumption in addition to providing a fast-acting (within 20 minutes) and sustained release action of up to 8 hours.

Curcumin C3 Complex® has the highest amount of human clinical studies and is used in more universities, research centers, and hospitals versus any other brand of curcumin/turmeric extract. It is also Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA, has safety dosage limit studies, and has been used for over 20 years by millions of people worldwide compared to other products. Some companies that claim higher bioavailability are actually measuring metabolites of curcuminoids such as glucuronides, not curcuminoids themselves. These metabolites recently have been shown in studies NOT to have anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, they are providing only a lower percentage of curcuminoids.

There is really no need to take a break from using Curcumin Plus as it works on numerous pathways within the body rather than just a single target, like many NSAIDs and medications. This makes it very effective and beneficial for continual and long-term use. In a way, Curcumin Plus works like a sprinkler system. It releases and equally distributes throughout the body, providing great anti-inflammatory effects when used regularly.

We only use Non-GMO corn starch – certified from the manufacturer of the corn starch. This is an inert ingredient so the product has come in contact with it, but it's too small to even measure.

To better reflect our focus as a company and brand, we’re proud to have our newly redesigned label. However, nothing has changed with the contents on the inside. This is the exact same product formulated by Sabinsa with Curcumin C3 Complex, Boswellin PS, Ginger Extract, and BioPerine.

Yes. One of the most important distinctions of having the bi-layered caplet is that it maintains 100% of the potency of ingredients in Curcumin Plus when you take it.  Unlike all other products on the market that come in capsules that have generic turmeric/curcumin and boswellia ingredients along with ginger, bromelin, papain, nattokinase, or any proteolytic enzymes – these ingredients degrade each other as they are mixed together in capsules. Therefore over time, the potency of those products is lowered from the time they leave the manufacturing facility, to the health store shelf and ultimately to your home. Studies show that these ingredients in capsules decrease potency by up to 60% by the time you take those products. With Curcumin Plus, 100% of the potency of ingredients is maintained when you take it – guaranteed.

Curcumin Plus uses a complex manufacturing process that is not used in the supplement industry, but used in the pharmaceutical industry – this is the unique process of making ingredients bi-layered. Rather than having tablets or capsules which take about 45 minutes to dissolve in the stomach, Curcumin Plus has water and lipid-soluble patented ingredients that provide an immediate onset within 20 minutes. Thus, providing a “fast-acting” response. It is then bi-layered and sustained released so those ingredients are slowly delivered in the body over 8 hours, providing a “long-lasting” effect.

When Curcumin C3 Complex is used by itself in a tablet or capsule, although it has health benefits, it will have very little absorption in the blood. When combining Curcumin C3 Complex with the patented BioPerine (95% piperine from black pepper extract), it will assist in the absorption and peak in the blood in 1 hour and then immediately drop off out of the therapeutic blood range within 1½ hours and continue to drop off completely by 3½ hours. Thus BioPerine does increase Curcumin C3 Complex by 2,000% in the study, which provides improved benefits, but it still lacks duration of efficacy.

Curcumin Plus uses the Bi-layered Sustained Release caplet, which starts working within 20 minutes of ingestion (fast-acting) and delivers the peak of all of its ingredients in the concentration range in the blood (within 45 minutes). Most importantly, Curcumin Plus maintains the concentration in the blood for up to 8 hours. This provides sustained release and synergistic benefits more than any other curcumin/turmeric that is made in capsules or tablets.

If you are pregnant or nursing, we recommend consulting with your health care professional before use, as a precautionary measure.

Curcumin Plus should be stored at room temperature, in a cool dry place. Preferably in a medicine cabinet or pantry. However, it is perfectly fine to store them in the freezer or refrigerator. If Curcumin Plus is traveling through extreme temperatures, the quality/potency will not be degraded in any way, according to the manufacturer.

Curcumin C3 Complex contains curcumin along with two other forms of curcumin, which help stabilize it. Studies revealed that the additional curcumins help protect from oxidative stress. C3 is more absorbable in the gastrointestinal tract versus standard curcumin by itself.

A recent study (The Strong Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Curcumin) showed that the major generic 95% curcuminoid products on the market had little to no anti-inflammatory or immunological benefit in comparison – only Curcumin C3 Complex had strong significant benefits.

There have been numerous clinical studies conducted showing the vast benefits of Curcumin C3 Complex, most notably it's ability to reduce inflammation.

There are several institutions using Curcumin C3 Complex in pre-clinical and clinical studies. For instance, UCLA School of Medicine, MD Anderson, and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine all are researching C3, among many others.

BioPerine offers many different health benefits, but it's main use is to improve the bioavailability of other nutrients, like Curcumin, for example.

Ingredients

No, Curcumin Plus nor it's ingredients are irradiated.

Curcumin Plus contains the exclusive Boswellin® PS. No other product available contains this new form of Boswellia that contains PS – Polysaccharide or Polysal. Polysal provides a synergistic benefit to the boswellic acids and AKBBA, making it stronger than each of the individual ingredients alone. Research shows the specific ratios of each have been chosen to enhance the total benefits. With this unique patented ingredient, it also provides a fast-acting (water soluble) action to absorb within 20 minutes, unlike any other Boswellia extract.

Gingerols are one of the most important compounds researched from a ginger extract. Most products are not standardized at all. For those that are, the range may be between 2 – 10%. Curcumin Plus provides ginger extract at 20%, which is the highest available for a dietary supplement. Also, the other ingredients in Curcumin Plus along with ginger are protected and potency is ensured through its specialized Bi-layered Technology.

Only BioPerine® used in Curcumin Plus is guaranteed to be standardized to 95% piperine. All other generic black pepper extracts are not. Also, the amount of BioPerine® used in each caplet of Curcumin Plus is at the optimum clinical dose for enhancing absorption at 5 mg, unlike other products that use between 1-2 mg.

Curcumin Plus is manufactured at the highest standards in the industry with Sabinsa, named the manufacturer of the year multiple times by the dietary supplement industry as they have been the leader in not only potency and purity but also in the quality of production.

With over 240 global patients with their ingredients (3 of which are in Curcumin Plus), the manufacturing is not just cGMP as many supplement manufacturers will claim but it is produced in an FDA-registered and audited facility. The reason for such higher standards is that these products are directly used in human clinical trials at hospitals and universities. For example, just with Curcumin C3® Complex, there are 70+ (and counting) human clinical studies. If you take all the competitors on the market, there are only about 30 studies combined. In addition, all the ingredients are grown on Sabinsa-owned controlled farms (over 400,000 acres) and the right cultivator of each plant is specifically used to get the right phytonutrients and compounds necessary. In addition, the patents are for the processing and extraction of specific compounds which make all the difference in efficacy.

In fact, a recent study (The Strong Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Curcumin) showed that the major generic 95% curcuminoid products on the market had little to no anti-inflammatory or immunological benefit in comparison – only Curcumin C3® Complex had strong significant benefits. Sabinsa, who owns the patents to the ingredients in Curcumin Plus, even wrote the Monograph for Curcuminoids for the USP (United States Pharmacopeia). Thus the manufacturing standards utilized are much higher than what all the suppliers in the supplement industry are held to since they are not regulated.

You should not be concerned about the use of Other Ingredients (Excipients) since they are “inert” and are in such trace amounts that they cannot be measured. What should be of concern is the following ...

  1. Learn about what types of curcumin and other ingredients are in your products and whether they are natural and pesticide-free.
  2. Is it synthetic (43% of one of the largest major suppliers to the U.S. of generic turmeric/curcumin extracts was found to be using synthetic forms made in a lab)?
  3. Is the curcumin extracted using harmful solvents (which are commonly used in generic and cheap turmeric/curcumin extracts)? These harmful solvents leave larger amounts of residue in the products and cause side effects.
  4. Is it irradiated? Almost all turmeric/curcumin products (as well as most natural herbal products) are irradiated.
  5. Is your curcumin tested for heavy metals (recently generic turmeric extract was found to have lead contamination due to the grinding devices from China) – ours is tested for heavy metals including lead and has no heavy metals. This is what the main problem is with many turmeric/curcumin products. Curcumin Plus is pesticide-free, gluten-free, soy-free, Non-GMO, and non-irradiated.

The excipients or inert ingredients listed in the Other ingredients are common to almost all tablets and capsules that are manufactured in both the dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industries. For example, any tablet that is Sustained Released, even if it is an herb or vitamin/mineral uses those other ingredients (and sometimes more). Any tablet that is made from a powder to be compacted, even if it's a whole food organic plant-based supplement, it still uses those ingredients to bind the tablet and also prevent the tablet from breaking apart in the manufacturing process. This is so the tablet can slide down the machines into bottles and not break into powder when you open the bottle and place it in your hands. Thus, when you look at all of the supplement markets, tablets/caplets are all made using these “inert” ingredients. That is how tablets/caplets are manufactured. Unfortunately, most companies white label (private label) products so they do not know anything about manufacturing and only provide information that is given by sales reps and marketers. Anybody who tells you that their tablets and/or caplets do not use those or other types of ingredients to do so for making them is not telling you the truth.

Unfortunately, most companies do not disclose these ingredients (since most of the products on the market are just private labels from contract manufacturers) and thus are not told about this since they are not measurable ingredients and thus recognized as “inert.” However, they should list them to comply with current dietary supplement regulations and disclose that information. Even if they do disclose it, they use the generic name such as “natural lubricant” versus the chemical name like we do. However, they are the same. This inert and excipient aspect causes confusion to the customers looking for health supplements, but that is the reality of manufacturing. Many people think it’s a major ingredient or even a minor ingredient, but it is an inert ingredient that is used in all manufacturing of tablets/caplets of supplements and pharmaceutical drugs. Being an inert ingredient basically means that it has come in contact with it (i.e. sliding down a machine) but cannot be measured since it's so small and is not categorized as a major or minor ingredient.  Many people, unfortunately, think that just because something is wildcrafted, organic, and Non-GMO it doesn’t use inert ingredients to make a tablet/caplet but they do.

Propyl glycol is a colorless and odorless liquid that may be derived from petroleum, natural gas, or vegetable sources. The propyl glycol in Curcumin Plus is plant-based from vegetable sources. As with all our ingredients, we source plant-based ingredients when available as an option. Propyl glycol has a long history of safe use in personal care products. It is on the FDA list of ingredients that are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). Propyl glycol in Curcumin Plus is an excipient or inert ingredient and thus is used on the machinery that the tablets slide down onto the bottle. It is not a major or minor ingredient but an inert/excipient ingredient that is so small it cannot be measured. However, unlike most companies, we disclose everything the product comes in contact with since it is used in hospitals, universities, and clinical trials.

If you find that Curcumin Plus tastes a bit too strong or spicy, we suggest placing the caplet with the orange-colored side on your tongue before you swallow it. The speckled side is the "spicy" side, which contains ginger. This will help the caplet go down smoothly and for you to avoid the strong flavor.

Magnesium Stearate is a fine white powder that sticks to your skin and is greasy to the touch. It is a simple salt made up of two substances, a saturated fat called stearic acid and the mineral magnesium. Stearic acid can also be found in many foods, such as chicken, eggs, cheese, chocolate, walnuts, salmon, cotton seed oil, palm oil, and coconut oil. However, the Magnesium Stearate in Curcumin Plus is plant-based.

Magnesium Stearate is commonly added to many foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In medications and vitamins, its primary purpose is to act as a lubricant. Magnesium Stearate is an additive that’s primarily used in medication capsules. It is considered a “flow agent.” It prevents the individual ingredients in a tablet or capsule from sticking to each other and the machine that creates the tablets and capsules. It helps improve the consistency and quality control of medication tablets and capsules.

It is possible to create supplement tablets and capsules without Magnesium Stearate, but it is more difficult to guarantee the consistency and quality of those tablets. Magnesium Stearate is used to delay the breakdown and absorption of medications, so they’re absorbed in the correct area of the bowel.

Magnesium Stearate is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) to consume. Since it is used as an excipient or inert ingredient, there is not enough to cause any problems. However when it is used as a major filler in many other supplements and medications on the market, if you ingest too much, it can have a mild laxative effect.

Some people on the internet claim that Magnesium Stearate suppresses your immune T-cell function and causes the cell membrane integrity in your helper T-cells to collapse. However, there is no scientific evidence to support those claims.

These claims have been made based on a single mouse study that was related to stearic acid, NOT magnesium stearate. Mice lack an enzyme in their T-cells that humans have. This makes stearic acid safe for us to ingest.

Some people have also claimed that Magnesium Stearate might interfere with your body’s ability to absorb the contents of medication or supplements tablets and capsules. But again, there is no scientific evidence to support those claims.

Some people report having negative reactions to Magnesium Stearate and feel much better when they eliminate it. These people might have a sensitivity to it. It is possible to be allergic to Magnesium Stearate like any ingredient (although it would be rare) and it can be difficult to avoid this food additive since it's in many packaged and processed foods whether listed or not.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Magnesium Stearate for use as an additive in food and supplements.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, it is considered safe for consumption in amounts below 2,500 milligrams (mg) per kilogram per day. That means for a 150-pound adult, that equals 170,000 mg per day that can be consumed (about 1/3 of a pound). Since there is less than a trace amount in Curcumin Plus, that can not be measured, (again being an excipient or inert ingredient), it is very safe to consume without concern and does not have enough to cause negative side effects.
